Evaluation Q4. How did you use new media technolog...

Thursday, 16 December 2010

Evaluation Q3) What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

Q2) How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

Evaluation Q1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

1) This image is one taken from our music video from when the lyrics quote the word 'education' the word is also created for our music video with Myrin, who plays the character of someone who recieves bad grades and tries his hardest to study to achieve better ones.

2) This image refers to the fact that SBR records is one recording company that doesnt just sign anyone, the type of artist we are looking for is someone who can step up to the plate, and deliver, music of reason and we feel that this image represents that, as the character, Terry (me), didnt need to pick up the mic, he could have easily have walked past, but he showed he had, not just the talent, but the passion for doing what he eventually did.

3) This is an image of a studio shot of Terry (me) singing the song. The costume suggests a more rock style of music, however, as a black male there is always going to be an element of hip-hop involved because of the way most black males are brought up and what genre of music they usually listen to from a young age, hence the genre of the song chosen was Rock/Hip-Hop.

4) This shot is of Nathaniel playing basketball against his rival, we thought of this basketball idea mainly from the film 'Coach Carter, who used this idea and this song in their film. We thought that this was a good thing to incorporate in our music video, as this is the first thing people will think of when they hear our sountrack, because it did so well for the film.

5) This picture is a fade/blur effect that we used on our camera, this was not done by Premier Pro or any other programme, this was done solely by the use of our Cannon. This shot is at the very beginning adding to the mystery of the audience still wondering what the music video will be about.

6) This is a scene that demonstrates lighting, as I described in my blog previously, this backetball scene was one which we done at early hours of the morning, just to get the perfect ligting for a scene like this in the season we were in. We definitely thought we achieved this as it was easy editing it in the studio, as we knew what sort of colour we were looking for.

7) This image reflects mise en scene, as the costumes create the character, Myrin had to bring in his Blazer and tie, from year 11 (last year) so that we could film him doing work and really give the audience the impression and make it clear that he was a student.

8) This is used in another music video, from Slim Thug ft B.O.B - So High, this is used in B.OB's verse. We thought that this would complement our video as we needed something that would make our video more emotional and experimental, and will also show editing skills that maybe this genre of music doesnt allow us to show as individuals.

9) Beyoncé - Like a Boy is a video that basically works backwards, we as a group always admired the idea of a dream being linked to our music video, we wanted to incorporate something in our video that would show a rewind in time, or something happening that never really happened. This image is of the rewind at the very end, which lets the audience know that all this never happened, but it easily could, if you were to work at something you really believed in.

SBR Recordings - Ethos

Our Record Label is called SBR Records, we specialise in music that aimed at a mass audience, however, unlike most others that are also aimed at a mass audience, We only sign bands that we feel hold a deeper meaning of existence, and bands that we feel will make a difference to people's lives. Other artists or bands that will feel will also be on the label, would be artists such as The Roots, K'Naan, Damien Marley etc. We feel that many of other record labels just focus solely on artists that make good music, however, we see past that and build upon the idea that music has the power to change the world.

Treatment

For our music video we are going to have three storylines along with the performance scenes. The performance scenes are going to be the base of the music video so if we have the problem of storage of footage we will be able to rely on the performance scenes as a back up to fill the blank scenes.

The first storyline is student who is played by me, Myrin Hall. He receives a grade F so he works constantly until he gets an A*. The second storyline is basketball player who is played by Nathaniel Prince, he loses at a one on one game but works on this technique tirelessly that eventually he wins the basketball match the second time round. The last storyline played by Terry Boateng is about a performer who is never chosen to perform so he practices and finally performs at a concert. The performance scenes are also played by Terry Boateng, the performance scenes will turn into the performance scenes of the performer’s storyline

In our music video there are many themes that are included and represented but there are three main themes that will stand out in our music video. The first theme is determination; each storyline portrays the theme of determination because in the students storyline he is determined to his A* so he works hard until he gets it. The performer storyline he is determined to become an excellent performer which he does as he turns into the performer of the music video. The basketball players is determined because he wants to make sure that the wins the basketball rematch so he practices to win.

The second theme for the music video is success because all the storylines achieve the tasks that they set out to do. So they were all successful because they come up on top so they accomplish what they need to. The third theme for the music video is dreams because in all the storylines the characters, are dreaming about them accomplishing so implying that everyone not matter what dream can achieve their dreams.

To introduce the music video we are going to have a mobile phone playing the song. After that we are going to have an introduction to all the characters and an introduction to their narratives. We are going to have the words don’t give up appear on the screen which is symbolizes that the characters are not going to stop trying and that they will accomplish what they set out to do.

In the middle we are going to be doing jump cuts of the four different parts of the music video. We are going to match the words to the meanings so for example humiliation will be show through Nathaniel losing at basketball.

To end the music video we are going to rewind the main scenes of each of the storylines to portray that it was all a dream but showing that people can achieve their dreams, it also shows that if you want to achieve your dreams you got to work towards them.

There is going to be a mixture of editing paced speed because of the different changes in the beat. The beat of this music video is a strong beat so when the beat increases so will the pace of the beat because we want to do on beat editing.

The lighting of the music video is mainly going to be bright because we was trying to portray through the lighting that through the struggling that each character is going to through the brightness is there to signifier that the characters will be successful. We use bright lighting on the performance scenes because the brightest draws the attention to the artist which adds to the performance effect of trying to show the skills of the artist.

We have made the music video black and white because the black and white is there to depict that the characters are trying to break through into colour so into success, so that at as the music video progresses and the characters get closer to achieving their goal they become more in colour showing that they are improving.

In our music video we are going to use a variety of camera angles on the performance scenes we are going to use a variety of camera angles to show that he is a good performer. For the basketball storyline we are going to have at lot of medium long shots as we would be trying to include all the action of the basketball match, also we are going to have close ups to show the facial expressions when he loses and when he wins. We are going to have a lot of close ups on the students storyline as we want to show the facial expressions as he struggles to get his grade up and then to show how much his expression changed when he gets that A*.

Target Audience

The target audience for our the song we have chosen (Let the Drummer kick) and the music video itself would be anyone still in the stage of aspiring or in the process of becoming something, for example, anyone in education, sports or just trying to make their dreams a reality, mainly between the ages of 14-24, both males and females. We chose this age range because we wanted to represent youth, they have been getting a lot of bad press lately, with all the gun and knife crime deaths in the UK. However, this video is for people who are caught in the middle of all this violence and all they really want to do is become successful.

Name: Todd
Occupation: University Student
Interests: Drummer in a Rock band,Hopes one day of becoming successful.
Hobbies: Listening to music and playing sports; Basketball, Football, & Hockey

The song 'Let the Drummer Kick' will be a form of inspiration to Todd as being a drummer in a band he may relate to this song as if he keeps on 'kickin' & pushin'' he and the rest of his band will make it far. The song is all about determination and drive, and trying your hardest to achieve whatever you want to achieve in life. The music video shows the struggles and challnges the three characters go through in order to become sucessful, and achieve what they wanted to achieve.

Digipak Individual ideas

We drafted many initial ideas for our groups digipak, this was mine. I thought that this theme, and serpia would be the best colouring effect, as it makes our whole digipak look challenging and that the protagonist which is featured as gone through a lot of strife and hardship in order to be sucessful, the name of the Album which we chose was, 'The Fuel for Success' This implies that this Album will be one that will drives others to become whatever they want to be and give them the belief that they can do so, if they work hard. This was something I learnt when conducting market research in our pre-production, people generally associate darkness with struggle and success with light.

Photography Training

In this session we learnt how to take clear 'good photos' Learning about composition. Understanding that every shot should have reason and purpose. For example, if we take a photo of a persons face, their necklace or the colour of their top should not be shown unless there is a clear purpose. Things should only be included if they are necessary.

We also learnt about the 'Rule of thirds' this was an imaginary grid usually 3x3 outlines the clear levels of an image.

For an example of a beach:
- The sky would be the top level
- In the middle would be that sea
- Then the beach floor would be the lowest level.

We touched upon Exposure, I feel this is a major factor in the process of capturing images, because lighting is such a key element in taking a 'good photo'.
For our Photo's we would be using Cannon EOS 450D
These camera's have an in-built 'P' feature which provides the user with autmatic exposure settings, in some rare cases you do need to adjust the exposure yourself t your taste, but a majority of the time this automated exposure setting is very useful.

Rough Cut Feedback

This is the feedback for when we showed out fellow classmates they gave us both Positive and Negative comments, things they thought we should think of improving, and things they thought we should keep the same.

Positive Comments
  • We had very clear shots.
  • The studio shots of me with the microphone was liked, our classmates said they were fond of our various camera angles.
  • They thought the lip-syncing was 'perfect'.
  • They also thought they we had made an excellent start.
Negative Comments
  • Needed more clever editing to match the beat and the footage.
  • Add more cuts, to make use of the footage, and to ensure that the audience dont get bored.
  • Get rid of unnecessary shadows in the studio shots.
This feedback was important at this stage in our production because if we had not been able to make these changes we may in the later stages regret it, because it would be much harder to edit out these mistakes. We feel that the addition to the words 'Dont Give Up' adds to the overall feel and message of our music video which is anything you really want in life you can achieve if you work hard at it and... 'Dont Give Up'

Permission

We emailed RCA records to ask permission to do use this video for our project, we saw that there were many fan videos on this site http://citizencope.com/copetv/. So we kinda knew getting permission for this video would be much easier.

Editing Two

We had many different ideas & effects that we wanted to incorporate in our music video, one of these was the idea to Use a lot of text in our music video flashing up around the screen when the word was mentioned in the song, a lot like the style of the Typographic music video below, however, when it came to editing we tried it out and it didn't look how we had previously hoped so we decided to scrap the idea. We decided to focus on the shots we already had and how we could improve them, thanks to our pre-production survey, we were able to see that from our question of a 'struggling' music video people thought it was more of a convention seeing a black and white effect being used throughout the main parts of our video.

Editing One

Today, was our first day of editing using Final Cut Pro. We tested out the program and uploaded the performance scene which we had recently recorded, when practising lip syncing. Some of this footage would also become part of our main footage for our final production and would be the scene that we would keep flicking back to after each other clip. We found that some of the camera angles that we thought were good turned out to be not so good when we reviewed them in the editing suite. Thankfully, we had filmed a lot more than we had initially thought we needed which meant we didn't have waste time and go back to film on a later date which we were extremely pleased about.

Meeting / Filming Three

Today, we decided to put our Lighting training to practice, as we used the TV studio to film the footage of me Lip syncing the words to the song. We also filmed a scene where Myrin & Nathaniel also sang along to the words, but had to sing the backing vocals when after every word in the verse, other words are spoken in the background. For example, 'Say Apollo had to break 'em' & 'Its a gift, it's a blessing'. We are still contemplating whether to use this footage as some of the lip syncing was poor and we don't really see how it would fit in.

Inspiration

This is a song by Slim Thug ft B.O.B this was one of our many inspirations when thinking of our music video, what type of genre we were looking for and what video we wanted to do, narrative was something we were passionate about.

This was another video we looked at when deciding which camera angles we wanted to dominate our music video, POV is the main camera angle used all the way through this music video, this gives a good effect as it shows how Kanye west is feeling about his girlfriend leaving him at the airport, it also gives you an insight into the artists feelings and his journey.

Meeting / Filming Two

Today we woke up at 5:00am to film, we wanted to get the best lighting and with sunrise at 7:10 it was essential to get their on time, to catch the perfect light. We filmed Nathaniel's basketball scenes where he was first being beaten and 'humiliated' by another baller beating him, and where he tried to improve his game with him practising by himself and then the rematch with the same person scoring the winning basket. We used various camera angles to bring out the very best of our lighting.

Lighting Training

We re-touched upon the basics of lighting and its uses, The technique is to use 3 lights called the Key light, Fill light, and the Back light.

The Key light is the main light and is normally faced to one side of the object directly.
The Fill light is the supporting secondary light and is much softer than the Key light placed further away from the object, and to one side.
The Back light is behind the object and still to one side, this is used to provide definition.

Later on, we visited the TV studio where we revisited these theories and put them into practice ourselves.

Market Research

I created & designed a survey on the website, http://www.surveymonkey.com, this was to test out peoples tastes in music and what editing techniques and styles draw them in the most for these tastes.

Meeting / Filming One (6th October 2010)

Today, we met to do our first part of filming. We filmed the beginning of Myrin's school scene, This consisted of him sitting at a table in his school uniform, doing work, when his teacher comes in and gives him a results for a previous test. He gets an F. He is distraught, he gets angry, scrunches up the paper and throws it away.

We used about 10 different camera angles, many of which we may not even use in our final production. We tried our hardest to get as much footage of each section of the story as possible.

Lip Syncing Training

This is the Lip syncing training session we did with our media technician Matt, from this we needed to conclude, who was the best at lip syncing out of the three of us, and who would be best suited to play the singer in our music video. Also, if we had a band scene (which we had, but decided not to include) if all the members in the group would be comfortable performing.

In the end it was decided that I was best suited to do the lip-syncing. Which was a massive success (even if I do say so myself).

Shooting Schedule

Here is our shooting schedule, we didn't necessarily stick to it. However, we tried our hardest to plan and make sure everything was in order, planning out our costumes/props, the various locations we were going to use, equipment we were going to use, and the purpose of filming and what we hoped to achieve at the end of it.

Analysis of Let the Drummer Kick (Typographic Animation)

The video is edited all the way through; the video begins with a long shot of the words ‘Let the Drummer Kick’ all overlapping each other. The words appear so small you can hardly make out what is being written. Suddenly, when the beat kicks in the words appear larger and move backwards and forwards to the beat. A combination of close-ups and panning shots are used, more and more words are rapidly appearing on the screen; a repetition of the line ‘Let the Drummer Kick’. The verse sees a change in the video and each word that is being spoken in the song appears on screen and each word carries a different meaning so the visual text on screen carries a different style, colour or theme.

The Genre of the song ‘Let the Drummer Kick’ is Rock Blues, therefore, overall, the video is quite dark and dull, nothing fancy is used in the video apart from the animation of text, simply because the lyrics of the song are the main focus of the song & video.

The relationship between the lyrics and the visual images on screen are clear, visuals match lyrics in terms of meaning. Each word in the verse of the song is expressed and brought to life. The relationship between the music and visuals is also clear. Lyrics of the song more to the beat of the song. For example, ‘Let the Drummer Kick’ the word ‘kick’ bounces down then slowly back up, on screen as if the drummer did indeed ‘kick’. This video is not performative or narrative. It does in fact have a clear concept all the way through. The video focuses on the lyrics and nothing else, the meaning of the song is the simple message of never giving up. This message is successfully expressed all the way through.

Welcome To My Blog

Hello, Examiners :D Welcome to my blog. My Name Is Terry Boateng & the song me and my group have chosen to create our music video on is the infamous 'Let The Drummer Kick' Performed by Citizen Cope.
