Analysis of Let the Drummer Kick (Typographic Animation)

The video is edited all the way through; the video begins with a long shot of the words ‘Let the Drummer Kick’ all overlapping each other. The words appear so small you can hardly make out what is being written. Suddenly, when the beat kicks in the words appear larger and move backwards and forwards to the beat. A combination of close-ups and panning shots are used, more and more words are rapidly appearing on the screen; a repetition of the line ‘Let the Drummer Kick’. The verse sees a change in the video and each word that is being spoken in the song appears on screen and each word carries a different meaning so the visual text on screen carries a different style, colour or theme.

The Genre of the song ‘Let the Drummer Kick’ is Rock Blues, therefore, overall, the video is quite dark and dull, nothing fancy is used in the video apart from the animation of text, simply because the lyrics of the song are the main focus of the song & video.

The relationship between the lyrics and the visual images on screen are clear, visuals match lyrics in terms of meaning. Each word in the verse of the song is expressed and brought to life. The relationship between the music and visuals is also clear. Lyrics of the song more to the beat of the song. For example, ‘Let the Drummer Kick’ the word ‘kick’ bounces down then slowly back up, on screen as if the drummer did indeed ‘kick’. This video is not performative or narrative. It does in fact have a clear concept all the way through. The video focuses on the lyrics and nothing else, the meaning of the song is the simple message of never giving up. This message is successfully expressed all the way through.
