Permission

We emailed RCA records to ask permission to do use this video for our project, we saw that there were many fan videos on this site http://citizencope.com/copetv/. So we kinda knew getting permission for this video would be much easier.

Editing Two

We had many different ideas & effects that we wanted to incorporate in our music video, one of these was the idea to Use a lot of text in our music video flashing up around the screen when the word was mentioned in the song, a lot like the style of the Typographic music video below, however, when it came to editing we tried it out and it didn't look how we had previously hoped so we decided to scrap the idea. We decided to focus on the shots we already had and how we could improve them, thanks to our pre-production survey, we were able to see that from our question of a 'struggling' music video people thought it was more of a convention seeing a black and white effect being used throughout the main parts of our video.

Editing One

Today, was our first day of editing using Final Cut Pro. We tested out the program and uploaded the performance scene which we had recently recorded, when practising lip syncing. Some of this footage would also become part of our main footage for our final production and would be the scene that we would keep flicking back to after each other clip. We found that some of the camera angles that we thought were good turned out to be not so good when we reviewed them in the editing suite. Thankfully, we had filmed a lot more than we had initially thought we needed which meant we didn't have waste time and go back to film on a later date which we were extremely pleased about.

Meeting / Filming Three

Today, we decided to put our Lighting training to practice, as we used the TV studio to film the footage of me Lip syncing the words to the song. We also filmed a scene where Myrin & Nathaniel also sang along to the words, but had to sing the backing vocals when after every word in the verse, other words are spoken in the background. For example, 'Say Apollo had to break 'em' & 'Its a gift, it's a blessing'. We are still contemplating whether to use this footage as some of the lip syncing was poor and we don't really see how it would fit in.

Inspiration

This is a song by Slim Thug ft B.O.B this was one of our many inspirations when thinking of our music video, what type of genre we were looking for and what video we wanted to do, narrative was something we were passionate about.

This was another video we looked at when deciding which camera angles we wanted to dominate our music video, POV is the main camera angle used all the way through this music video, this gives a good effect as it shows how Kanye west is feeling about his girlfriend leaving him at the airport, it also gives you an insight into the artists feelings and his journey.

Meeting / Filming Two

Today we woke up at 5:00am to film, we wanted to get the best lighting and with sunrise at 7:10 it was essential to get their on time, to catch the perfect light. We filmed Nathaniel's basketball scenes where he was first being beaten and 'humiliated' by another baller beating him, and where he tried to improve his game with him practising by himself and then the rematch with the same person scoring the winning basket. We used various camera angles to bring out the very best of our lighting.

Lighting Training

We re-touched upon the basics of lighting and its uses, The technique is to use 3 lights called the Key light, Fill light, and the Back light.

The Key light is the main light and is normally faced to one side of the object directly.
The Fill light is the supporting secondary light and is much softer than the Key light placed further away from the object, and to one side.
The Back light is behind the object and still to one side, this is used to provide definition.

Later on, we visited the TV studio where we revisited these theories and put them into practice ourselves.

Market Research

I created & designed a survey on the website, http://www.surveymonkey.com, this was to test out peoples tastes in music and what editing techniques and styles draw them in the most for these tastes.

Meeting / Filming One (6th October 2010)

Today, we met to do our first part of filming. We filmed the beginning of Myrin's school scene, This consisted of him sitting at a table in his school uniform, doing work, when his teacher comes in and gives him a results for a previous test. He gets an F. He is distraught, he gets angry, scrunches up the paper and throws it away.

We used about 10 different camera angles, many of which we may not even use in our final production. We tried our hardest to get as much footage of each section of the story as possible.

Lip Syncing Training

This is the Lip syncing training session we did with our media technician Matt, from this we needed to conclude, who was the best at lip syncing out of the three of us, and who would be best suited to play the singer in our music video. Also, if we had a band scene (which we had, but decided not to include) if all the members in the group would be comfortable performing.

In the end it was decided that I was best suited to do the lip-syncing. Which was a massive success (even if I do say so myself).

Shooting Schedule

Here is our shooting schedule, we didn't necessarily stick to it. However, we tried our hardest to plan and make sure everything was in order, planning out our costumes/props, the various locations we were going to use, equipment we were going to use, and the purpose of filming and what we hoped to achieve at the end of it.
